I've been interested in this. Basically, what have been the maximum accurate ranges? In Return of the Jedi, is it true that the ships were fighting at hudreds/even thousands of kilometers away? What part of the movie can I witness that? Any links? I really need to know; it's killing me.What range were the space battles in the orinigal trilogy of Star Wars?
There are no solid stats on weapon ranges, they vary from source to source, but the designers behind the Star Wars d20 Role-Playing Game (Revised 1st Edition) put these in raw general terms which comes closes to the types of figures used in other Star Wars sources and what is seen in the movies.

***Space Combat Grid Scale is 500 meters/square.
';Point Blank'; Range is 0-1 squares (about 500 meters or closer)
';Short'; Range is 2-5 squares (about 501 meters to 2,500 meters)
';Medium'; Range is 6-10 squares (about 2,501 to 5,000 meters)
';Long'; Range is 11-20 squares (about 5,001 to 10,000 meters)
***The maximum effective range is 20 squares for any weapon, so nothing fires further than 10,000 meters (10km or 6.21 miles) under the game's space combat rules.
***Weapon accuracy (and hence the effective ranges) for various ships are determined by Crew Skill Rating, Fire Control Rating, and Size of both the ship and its target.
To answer your question in Return of the Jedi...
';...and engage those Star Destroyers at point blank range.';
';At that close range we won't last very long.';
';We'll last longer than we would against that Death Star, and we just might take a few of them with us.';
- Part of the communications between Lando Calrissian and Admiral Akbar after the Death Star opens fire. -
So, they were most likely fighting at ';short'; and ';point blank'; range and were within 2,500 meters (2.5km) or 1.5525 miles of each other to ward off the Death Star firing on more of the Rebel fleet.What range were the space battles in the orinigal trilogy of Star Wars?
i'm not sure... i've never thought about that before.. its an excellent question though! i always thought they were maybe a hundred feet away.. you could always find the blueprint for the Falcon and use a scale... like if the Falcon is 2 cm on the screen and you know its x long.. then a distance of 10 cm is... fill in the blank. hope this helps =D
I was there... don't believe the hype...
It was a few yards, at best...
