Do the Godfather movies work if viewed as a complete trilogy?

(is there a consistent narrative thread throughout the three movies)? Or, do they work best when viewed as individual movies? Why or why not?Do the Godfather movies work if viewed as a complete trilogy?
I do not see conflicts in the narrative when seen as a triology. The Godfather III is set like 20 years after the second giving you time to think those missing in the third one, like Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) just have died.

Original plot for Godfather III had a storyline with Tom Hagen and Michael Corleone splitting apart. This was dropped when salary deals with Duvall failed.
