I am 14 years old and i live in the Philippines. I wrote a 117,000 word book with a friend. It is now being edited and proofread (by co-author) and is waiting to be published; another two books are to be written. Meanwhile, our parents seem to think that this is second, third, fourth or even six hundredth priority. It seems like . . . until we hit the bestsellers and make millions of dollars (i'll make sure of that . . .), i think we'll never get the support we need. We'll always have to make excuses or do a hundred other things BEFORE we start to write. How do we convince them that this is something GOOD. How could they realize that we're two of the few young people in the world who could actually write ANYTHING?How do i convince my parents to support our writing and publishing a trilogy?
Well I'll tell you a brief anecdote that relates quite easily to this. When I was abut 15 years old I happened to like watching movies a lot. And so I wondered to myself, ';Do directors make these movies purely out of their mind or do they follow a blueprint?'; Well as time went on I discovered movie screenplays and I said, ';Wow, thats something neat!'; So, I promptly discovered how to write a screenplay in a week or so. When I turned 16 I began to write a screenplay. My family never supported me. So I said, ';Meh.'; They thought I would never get it sold. So basically, I started to write on my own time. I really didn't give a crap about what they said. And when it was finished I sold it. I can't remember specifically how much for. But when I did sell it they were amazed and they supported me. My father bought me a laptop to write more. So what I'm trying to say is that do it anyway! If you have hundreds of things to do before the book, do them, then pursue the book. Once, and if it gets published, and it makes money. Laugh at them. Prove them wrong! Show them you are worth it! Then they will realise they made a mistake. And no you are not two people who can write actually anything. There's a lot of young people around the globe inspired by writers like Christopher Paolini, J.K. Rowling. And HELL they did not get the justice they needed either! Paolini's parents were doubtful. Rowling was turned down by 4 publishing companies. But guess what they made it! So can you, just forget about them and make a step...you could write a book that will make an era like Harry Potter. So as I said: just do it because you only need to rely on yourself not your parents. How do i convince my parents to support our writing and publishing a trilogy?
First of all, i'd like to congratulate you on writing a book at such a young age and committing to it. It seems like you're really getting going with your book and you're really sticking with with it.
As for the whole parents-don't-understand situation, trust me, I feel your pain. I'm filipino as well and i'm the first generation to live in the U.S. My parents lived in the Philippines, so obviously they were raised differently. Growing up now, I've been noticing that what I want to do with my life is completely different with their views on how I should live my life. For example, I want to do something in life that i'm happy with -- while they want me to grow up to make a lot of money, regardless of personal fulfillment and happiness.
I honestly really think it's because of how we're raised that we have such differing views. My parents grew up not really having a choice with what to do with their lives, as long as they made money they were happy. Though, since I live in the U.S., I've been blessed to see that there are many oppertunities in front of me -- I don't have to work the same way they did, and I don't have to work at a job that they want me to work since it's my life.
I suggest that you talk to them and be very, very clear that writing is what you want to do. If they don't understand, than it really can't be helped since they won't be able to feel the same way you do. Just keep going with your book, don't stop or doubt, and never give up! Don't ever let them discourage you, and just believe in the talents of you and your friend and i'm sure you'll get very far!
The best of luck!
Maybe your parents now how slim the chances of hitting a gold nugget is? I dont know anything about the quality of your storytelling and your writing but its not enough to produce a great number of words. You have to produce a great story to.
Maybe you shall try to negociate a contract with your parent stipulating a certain time everyday/week that goes into writing without spoiling your homework and schoolstudies? I think that it is that your parents are worried about eg you giving up school for a dream. Johan
You sometimes have to convince with proof, intelligent people are not just going to take your word for it.
Keep showing them that you are responsible young people, they are only concerned about teaching you values. Do your chores, your school work, and the other things life has to offer. In time you will prove that writing can become a career.
I'm a grandparent's age - print this out and tell them I said to support you.
Print it out and make them read them. I am 14 and my 100,000 word book was just accepted by 2 TWO! places for publishing. Tell them I said your amazing...you can say I read it too. (But thats a little white lie)
